Il progetto Omote Ura, significa “fuori e dentro”. Due parole fondamentali che si usano per identificare il principio della cultura giapponese. “Omote” si riferisce al rapporto col mondo esterno e quale comportamento assumere nella società. “Ura” indica invece la sfera intima e privata di una persona. Il progetto di Vittoria Fragapane unisce così la realtà alla memoria, il presente al passato, i sensi con l'esperienza.

“Quando a casa di mia nonna paterna arrivava mia zia Yuko, che tornava da Tokyo, portava sempre piccoli doni. Da bambina ricordo l’odore che fuoriusciva da quelle scatole quando venivano aperte, così diverso dagli odori a cui ero abituata. Si dice che quando si entra in casa propria non si riesce a riconoscere il proprio odore, al contrario si riesce a distinguere perfettamente l’odore quando si entra nelle case degli altri. Solo dopo un lungo viaggio, l’odore di casa ci sembra addirittura nuovo. Da sempre il Giappone ha significato per me una seconda casa. Camminando per le strade nel mio primo viaggio a Tokyo, le immagini presenti sfumavano con quelle della memoria. L’unione fra il mondo esteriore e interiore forma una sorta di legame tra esperienze e luoghi, come se uno stesso cammino fosse già stata percorso. Ponendomi sulla soglia fra questi due mondi, ho ricercato similitudini e differenze di un paese a me straniero, ma che sento da sempre così familiare. C’erano momenti in cui avveniva una profonda connessione con ciò che vedevo e sentivo in un determinate momento e spazio. Vivendo in un periodo storico globalizzato, diventa abituale non tanto riconoscersi in un luogo, ma nel sentimento comune che ognuno di noi attribuisce all’idea di casa attraverso una precisa atmosfera”. 

L'allestimento nello spazio de Il Meccanico restituisce questo dialogo. Una costruzione che riordina lo sguardo misurato sulle forme e sul rapporto di pieni e vuoti. Il percorso diventa così un viaggio intimo-interiore, dal fuori al dentro, passando per la casa, per gli oggetti. Dentro e fuori s'incontrano sulla soglia, finestre che inquadrano altre finestre per raccontare una percezione sintetica, di accumulo, soggettiva del Giappone.

Vittoria Fragapane (1993) è fotografa e curatrice. Dopo aver studiato architettura d’interni, decide di dedicarsi alla fotografia, frequentando il master in Fotografia e Visual Design presso la NABA di Milano, durante il quale ha l’opportunità di trasferirsi per alcuni mesi a Tokyo per lavorare con il fotografo Takashi Homma. Nel soggiorno giapponese, si dedica anche ad un progetto personale che verrà poi pubblicato nel 2021, con il titolo Omote Ura, attraverso la piattaforma di crowdfunding Selfself. Sempre nello stesso anno, pubblica il progetto Travels into One Nation of the World con la casa editrice Artphilein Editions di Lugano. Il progetto, esposto nello stesso anno alla dodicesima Biennale dell’Immagine di Chiasso, in Svizzera, è stato in seguito (2024) in mostra presso i Magazzini Fotografici di Napoli, assieme a Carlo and Luciana di Erik Kessels a cura di Simone Azzoni. Dal 2022 collabora come membro della giuria e curatrice della sezione Editable, sezione dedicata all’editoria del Liquida Photofestival di Torino. Dal 2024 collabora con il festival Castelnuovo Fotografia (Roma). Attualmente lavora come curatrice e photobook designer per la Fondazione De Pietri Artphilein e Artphilein Editions.

The project Omote Ura means "outside and inside." Two fundamental words used to identify the principle of Japanese culture. "Omote" refers to the relationship with the external world and the behavior one assumes in society. "Ura," on the other hand, indicates the intimate and private sphere of a person. Vittoria Fragapane's project thus unites reality with memory, the present with the past, and the senses with experience.

"When my aunt Yuko arrived at my paternal grandmother's house, coming back from Tokyo, she always brought small gifts. As a child, I remember the smell that came out of those boxes when they were opened, so different from the scents I was used to. It is said that when you enter your own home, you cannot recognize your own smell; on the contrary, you can perfectly distinguish the smell when you enter someone else's house. Only after a long journey does the smell of home even seem new. Japan has always meant a second home to me. Walking through the streets on my first trip to Tokyo, the present images blurred with those of memory. The union between the exterior and interior world forms a sort of bond between experiences and places, as if the same path had already been traveled. "Positioning myself on the threshold between these two worlds, I sought similarities and differences in a country that is foreign to me but that I have always felt so familiar with. There were moments when a deep connection occurred with what I saw and felt in a specific moment and space. Living in a globalized historical period, it becomes common not so much to recognize oneself in a place, but in the common feeling that each of us attributes to the idea of home through a precise atmosphere."

The installation in the space of Il Meccanico reflects this dialogue. A construction that reorganizes the measured gaze on forms and the relationship of fullness and emptiness. The path thus becomes an intimate-inner journey, from the outside to the inside, passing through the house and the objects. Inside and outside meet on the threshold, windows framing other windows to tell a synthetic, accumulative, subjective perception of Japan.

Vittoria Fragapane (1993) is a photographer and curator. After studying interior architecture, she decided to dedicate herself to photography, attending the master's program in Photography and Visual Design at NABA in Milan, during which she had the opportunity to move to Tokyo for a few months to work with photographer Takashi Homma. During her stay in Japan, she also worked on a personal project that was later published in 2021, titled Omote Ura, through the crowdfunding platform Selfself. Also in the same year, she published the project Travels into One Nation of the World with the publishing house Artphilein Editions in Lugano. The project, exhibited that same year at the twelfth Biennale of Image in Chiasso, Switzerland, was later (2024) shown at the Photographic Warehouses in Naples, alongside Carlo and Luciana by Erik Kessels curated by Simone Azzoni. Since 2022, she has collaborated as a jury member and curator of the Editable section, dedicated to publishing at the Liquida Photofestival in Turin. From 2024, she collaborates with the Castelnuovo Fotografia festival (Rome). She currently works as a curator and photobook designer for the De Pietri Artphilein Foundation and Artphilein Editions.
