«Who is the author of these images disrupted by time, air, water and manipulation? Is it a photographer from the 1920s whose traces and name have been lost? Or is it the micro-organisms that transformed the images into objects of aesthetic contemplation? » asks Luce Lebart. The exhibition Mold is Beautiful – hosted in the Veronese space of Il Meccanico - questions the capacity of photography to excite. “Offered for contemplation, these images remind us how the aesthetic qualities of a photograph are decidedly independent of an artistic intent”, writes Luce Lebart. Images have many lives and many times: they have been loved, despised, lost, exposed. Images are documention, opera, testimony, archive, and all of this simultaneously. Mold is beautiful is also about the materiality of analogue images, how time has worked and dialogued with their survival. “Wonders of oblivion, successes of neglect and disinterest, these images, damaged by a flood, have been deprived of daylight for years. Abandonment, added to the organic resources inherent in their cogelatin, potato starch), provided the ideal terrain for random creative proliferation.” A green-dominant autochrome was originally a photo of a garden taken in the 1920s, other images showed a forest fire, a firework display on the quayside, the vault of heaven, the shore of Lake Geneva and clouds heralding a storm. …

Luce Lebart is a photography historian, curator and researcher for the Archive of Modern Conflict. Her work concerns the archive, scientific imaginaries, techniques and the materiality of images. She is the author of books on photography, including "Mold is beautiful" (2015) or "Gold and Silver" (RVB BOOKS, 2019) and reference works such as "Les grandes photographes du XXe siècle" (Larousse, 2017) and "A world History of Women Photographers" (Thames & Hudson, 2022).
Her exhibitions presented in France and elsewhere include "Cloud Album" (Vancouver, 2022); "La Saga des inventions" (Rencontres d'Arles, 2019); "Gold and Silver" and "Frontera" (musée des Beaux arts du Canada, 2017 et 2018) and again "Mauvaises Herbes" (CPIF, 2022). Since 2022, she has been part of the artistic direction of the Fotografia Europea Festival.
Francesco Biasi is artistic coordinator at the Centre Photographique d'Île-de-France (Pontault-Combault, France).
His curatorial projects include "Tentacle Togetherness" by Anouk Kruithof (2023) and "Blank Memory" by François Bellabas (2024).

«Chi è l'autore di queste immagini sconvolte dal tempo, dall'aria, dall'acqua e dalle manipolazioni? È un fotografo degli anni '20 di cui si sono perse le tracce e il nome?
Oppure sono i microrganismi che hanno trasformato le immagini in oggetti di contemplazione estetica?» chiede Luce Lebart.
La mostra Mold is Beautiful - ospitata nello spazio veronese de Il Meccanico - s'interroga sulla capacità della fotografia di emozionare. “Offerte alla contemplazione, queste immagini ci ricordano come le qualità estetiche di una fotografia sono decisamente indipendenti da un intento artistico”, scrive Luce Lebart.
Le immagini hanno molte vite e molti tempi: sono state amate, disprezzate, perdute, esposte. Le immagini sono documentio, operea, testimonianza, archivio e tutto questo contemporaneamente.
Mold is beautiful parla anche della materialità delle immagini analogiche, di come il tempo abbia lavorato e dialogato con la loro sopravvivenza. “Meraviglie dell'oblio, successo della incuria e del disinteresse, queste immagini, danneggiate da un'inondazione, sono state private della luce del giorno per anni. L’abbandono, sommato alle risorse organiche insite nella loro composizione (gelatina, fecola di patate), ha fornito il terreno ideale per una proliferazione creativa casuale.”
Un’autocromia a dominante verde era in origine la foto di un giardino scattata negli anni Venti, altre immagini mostravano un incendio boschivo, uno spettacolo pirotecnico sulla banchina, la volta celeste, la riva del lago di Ginevra e delle nuvole che pre annunciavano una tempesta. …

Luce Lebart è una storica della fotografia, curatrice e ricercatrice per la collezione Archive of Modern Conflict. I suoi lavori riguardano l'archivio, gli immaginari scientifici, le tecniche e la materialità delle immagini. È autrice di libri di fotografie, tra cui appunto “Mold is beautiful” (2015) o “Gold and Silver” (RVB BOOKS, 2019) e opere di riferimento come “Les grandes photographes du XXe siècle” (Larousse, 2017) e “A world History of Women Photographers” (Thames & Hudson, 2022).
Tra le sue esposizioni presentate in Francia ed altrove figurano “Cloud Album” (Vancouver, 2022); “La Saga des inventions” (Rencontres d’Arles, 2019); “Gold and Silver” e “Frontera” (musée des Beaux arts du Canada, 2017 et 2018) e ancora “Mauvaises Herbes” (CPIF, 2022).
