Already But Not Yet
While triggering a shot, a basketball player is perfectly aware whether he will score or not. It is a feeling of projection. It depends on skill, confidence and talent and can also be influenced by the surrounding environment. When the ball is still on its trajectory to the ring, the only action left to the player is to wait and witness something that has already happened but not yet completed.
Already But Not Yet embraces the challenge of searching and representing this specific yet undefined sense of projection, suspension and change. Useless moments in which the actor becomes a spectator, lapses of time in which an inertial process of change can be predicted but not substantially modified.
The images narrate an incessant balance between the resignation for what has already been and the hope for what has yet to come. This research captures this coexistence, of the inevitable with the possible, and gives it back to the viewer, evoking a sense of waiting that could last for an instant or for an entire existence.
Francesco Villa (Sesto San Giovanni, 1987) studied Design at Politechnic University of Milan and obtained a Master Degree in Photography at IUAV, Venice.
His photography is conceived as a device to investigate and represent the complexity of the contemporary, thus his projects become open questions to the viewer for a collective speculation of the present time.
After his first collective shows (Art Around with MuFoCo of Cinisello Balsamo, 2013 and F4, Un’idea di fotografia at Fondazione Fabbri in Pieve di Soligo, 2017), Francesco has his first solo show, Carene, at Marselleria in Milan. Together with Francesco Paleari and Elia Pinna, he founds Altana in 2019 as a collective project for photography and publishing. With Altana he sets up a collective exhibition titled A place to enjoy the view at Brace Brace, and takes part to Les rencontres d’Arles in the section Temple Arles Books.

Already But Not Yet
Mentre si prepara al lancio, un giocatore di basket è perfettamente consapevole se segnerà o no. E' una sensazione di proiezione. Dipende dall'abilità, dalla fiducia e dal talento e può anche essere influenzato dall'ambiente circostante. Quando la palla è ancora sulla sua traiettoria verso il canestro, l'unica azione rimasta al giocatore è quella di aspettare e assistere a qualcosa che è già accaduto ma non ancora completamente. Already But Not Yet abbraccia la sfida di cercare e rappresentare questo senso specifico ma non definito di proiezione, sospensione e cambiamento. Momenti inutili in cui l'attore diventa spettatore, intervalli di tempo in cui un processo inerziale di cambiamento può essere previsto ma non sostanzialmente modificato. Le immagini narrano un equilibrio incessante tra la rassegnazione per ciò che è già stato e la speranza per ciò che deve ancora venire. Questa ricerca coglie la coesistenza dell'inevitabile con il possibile, e la restituisce allo spettatore, evocando un senso di attesa che potrebbe durare per un istante o per un'intera esistenza.

Nel 2019 fonda Altana con Francesco Paleari ed Elia Pinna, creando un progetto collettivo per la fotografia e l’editoria.
