L’isola della salvezza

La chiamano “L’isola della salvezza” gli abitanti di questa comunità nascosta e silenziosa.

Quando ci passi vicino, sulla trafficata strada che da Mosca porta a Yaroslav, quasi non ti accorgi della sua esistenza, eppure e un centro spirituale, educativo e culturale unico in tutta la Russia. Fondata nei primi anni 90 da un prete ortodosso, doveva essere inizialmente una confraternita di una trentina di persone, riunite per vivere insieme secondo i principi del vangelo e dei santi padri. Con il tempo e diventata una comunità che oggi accoglie 300 ragazzi, molti dei quali disadattati o con problemi familiari. Niente Tv, internet, cellulari e niente denaro, considerati mali della società. Si zappa la terra, si studia, si balla. Si forgia l’anima e si allena il corpo. I valori supremi sono Dio e la patria.

Un’utopia educativa fuori dal mondo ma immersa nella storia, dove l’impegno di tutti per un cambiamento individuale e crescita armoniosa mantiene viva la speranza.

Francesco Comello nasce a Udine nel 1963. È un fotografo freelance. Lavora e vive in provincia di Udine. Diplomato alla Scuola d’Arte comincia a lavorare nel campo della grafica pubblicitaria e dell’illustrazione. Fin dal tempo della scuola si appassiona di fotografia, ma e solo dal 2008, con il suo primo viaggio in Russia, che intensifica il suo interesse con l’intento di produrre dei racconti fotografici. Nel 2012 e 2013 fa parte del Collettivo Synapse. Nel 2016 vince il primo premio al World Report Spot Light Award e nel 2017 il 3º premio al WPP nella categoria “Daily Life Stories”. Nel 2018 pubblica il suo primo libro insieme a Barbara Tutino “Yo soy Fidel”. Nel 2019 viene nominato autore dell’anno FIAF che gli pubblica la monografia “Vite sfiorate”. Nel luglio 2020 e finalista al World Report - Master Award e Single shot. Nello stesso anno riceve il Premio Friuli Venezia Giulia Fotografia del CRAF. Partecipa a numerose esposizioni nazionali ed internazionali.

Its habitants call it “The Isle of Salvation”. When you cross the road that from Moscow brings you to Yaroslva, you almost don’t realize its presence and yet it is one of a kind across the whole country. The island is lived by a hidden and silent community and where a spiritual, educational and cultural center is found. 

Founded by an orthodox priest in the early 90s, the island was initially thought to become a confraternity where about thirty people would have led a life according to the gospels. Nowadays, this same community counts about three hundred children and young adults, many of them ill-suited and with family issues as a background. 

There is no television, internet, cell phones and no money, due to the consideration of them being the evil products of modern society. Here the kids work in the fields, study and dance. The soul is forged and the body is trained. The supreme values stand on God and the Homeland. An educational utopia outside the world, where hope is kept alive by everyone’s commitment to individual change a harmonious growth. 

Francesco Comello was born in Udine in 1963. He is based in the province of his hometown, where he both lives and works. After getting a Diploma in the School of Art, he starts working in Advertising and Graphical Arts. While studying, the interest towards photography keeps growing on him but it is just in 2008, after his first trip to Russia, that his passion intensifies and with it, the idea of producing photographic stories.

In 2012 and 2013 he joins the Synapse Collective. In 2016 he wins the first prize at the World Report Spot Light Award and in 2017 the 3rd prize at WPP in the "Daily Life Stories" category. In 2018 he publishes his first book alongside Barbara Tutino "Yo soy Fidel". 

In 2019 he is named Author of the Year by FIAF, which publishes his monograph "Vite sfiorate". In July 2020 he is a finalist in World Report - Master Award and Single shot. In this same year, he receives the Friuli Venezia Giulia Photography Award from CRAF. He takes part in numerous national and international exhibitions.
