ravers’ interiors

“Vorresti dirmi di grazia quale strada prendere per uscire di qui?”, disse Alice
“Dipende soprattutto da dove vuoi andare”, disse il gatto.
“Non m’importa molto”, disse Alice.
“Allora non importa che strada prendi” disse il gatto.
“Purchè arrivi in qualche posto”, aggiunse Alice a mò di spiegazione.
“Ah per questo stai pure tranquilla – disse il gatto – basta che non ti fermi prima.”

Come in un parallelo “paese delle meraviglie”, ragazzi e “crew” da diverse parti del mondo sono in continuo movimento, con ogni mezzo - principalmente camper e chi non può permetterselo arriva in treno o addirittura a piedi - alla ricerca delle feste organizzate nelle TAZ  “Zone Temporaneamente Autonome”.

Scelgono il luogo, montano i loro sound-system e una musica con volume altissimo inizia a investirli e avvolgere gli alberi nei boschi, nelle spiagge o nei capannoni nell’oscurità della notte.

Luci e corpi danzanti iniziano a confluire davanti ai muri di casse, la musica procede senza sosta col suo ritmo incessante e ripetitivo, fino al mattino del giorno seguente quando la luce sorge nuovamente, e ci si sente totalmente amalgamati a questa temporanea società parallela in grado di emanare piacevoli sensazioni che poi alcuni di loro continuano a rincorrere quando sospendono la loro vita ordinaria di docenti, meccanici, baristi o studenti.

Qui, in questo “paese delle meraviglie”, ogni individuo ha un ruolo fondamentale ma nessuno prevale sugli altri, sono tutti alla ricerca di una distanza dalla quotidianità ed in questa ricerca si stanno ancora muovendo, anche in questo momento, in giro per il mondo di party in party.

Ero curioso di capire le dinamiche di questo mondo parallelo che un po’ per il suo misticismo ed un po’ per il timore mi ha sempre attratto. 

Il fatto di essere tutto organizzato in segreto, nessuno conosce la location esatta fino a poche ore dalla festa, i sistemi che si sono evoluti attorno a questa necessità. Di fatto è come se tutto questo non esistesse. 

La macchina fotografica è stato il mio lasciapassare per entrare nei loro camper, roulotte, tende e ascoltare le loro storie, osservare come si organizzano e si arrangiano per sposare questo stile di vita che continua nel corso degli anni nonostante divieti e demonizzazioni.

Mi sono avvicinato, ho parlato con loro e mi sono goduto la festa da dentro per poterne comprendere il fascino che con la sua lunga onda continua negli anni ad attirare raver e traveller.

Nato a Terni nel 1983, di recente rientrato dall’Albania dove tra il 2014 d il 2019 ho realizzato una trilogia:

“Fade Into You” che indaga la percezione dell’omosessualità nel paese balcanico;

“Voices across the sea” sul fenomeno dell’esportazione dei call center italiani;

“Ikim” riguardo la continua migrazione del popolo Albanese e la sua nota diaspora ed esposto al Muzeu Historik Kombetar di Tirana durante il Tirana Photo Festival 2019.

Nel 2018 ho lavorato per Der Spiegel e Die Zeit, realizzando dei reportage sulla diaspora Albanese e su un campo di addestramento militare Iraniano presente nei pressi della capitale.

Oltre ai lavori sull’Albania 2019 ho realizzato “ravers’ interiors” indagine sul mondo traveler dei freeparty che è diventato anche una fanzine autoprodotta.

Nel 2017 il libro “Steel Here – America Flavor” curato da Elisa Biagi, approccio autoriale al racconto di una squadra di Football Americano dilettantistica Ternana (gli Steelers). Da cui è stata poi realizzata una mostra al MUFA (Museo del Football Americano) di Castel Giorgio.

Nel 2016 ho partecipato alla mostra collettiva sulla Street Photography Italiana “ET CETERA -  Italian Street Photography”, ospitata dall’ Istituto Italiano di Cultura a Praga (Repubblica Ceca).

Nel 2015 durante la cerimonia di apertura del primo TIphF (Tirana International Photo Festival) ho presentato il progetto fotografico “Ikim” sulla diaspora Albanese.

Ho studiato la fotografia principalmente da autodidatta ma anche frequentando corsi e laboratori: “Ad Personam” percorso curatoriale con Laura Manione

“IsoZero” autorialità nella fotografia, tenuto dal fotografo Efrem Raimondi; 

“how to write about you and your art” presentazione di progetti fotografici personali con Laura Tori Petrillo per Academy Now;

"Would you please tell me which way to go out of here?" Said Alice

"It mostly depends on where you want to go," said the cat.

"I don't care much," said Alice.

"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the cat.

"As long as I get somewhere," Alice added as an explanation.

As in a parallel "wonderland", boys and "crews" from different parts of the world are constantly on the move, by any means - mainly campers and those who cannot afford much arrive by train or even on foot - in search of the parties organized in the TAZ "Temporarily Autonomous Zones".

They choose the place, mount their sound-systems and a music with very high volume starts to invest them and wrap the trees in the woods, on the beaches or in the sheds in the darkness of the night.

Lights and dancing bodies begin to flow in front of the walls of speakers, the music proceeds relentlessly with its incessant and repetitive rhythm, until the morning of the following day when the light rises again, and you feel totally amalgamated with this temporary parallel society capable to give off pleasant sensations that some of them continue to chase when they suspend their ordinary life as teachers, mechanics, bartenders or students.

Here, in this "wonderland", each individual has a fundamental role but no one prevails over the others, they are all looking for a distance from everyday life and in this search they are still moving, even at this moment, partying around the world.

I was curious to understand the dynamics of this parallel world that partly for its mysticism and partly for fear has always attracted me.

Everything is organized in secret, nobody knows the exact location until a few hours after the party, some sort of system that has evolved around their needs. In fact, it is as if all this did not exist.

The camera was my pass to get into their campers, caravans, tents and listen to their stories, observe how they organize and arrange themselves to marry this lifestyle that continues over the years despite prohibitions and demonizations.

I approached, I talked to them and I enjoyed the party from the inside to be able to understand the charm that with its long wave continues over the years to attract ravers and travelers.

Born in Terni in 1983, recently returned from Albania where between 2014 and 2019 I made a trilogy: "Fade Into You" which investigates the perception of homosexuality in the Balkan country;

"Voices across the sea" on the export phenomenon of Italian call centers; "Ikim" about the continuous migration of the Albanian people and its known diaspora, was exhibited at the Muzeu Historik Kombetar of Tirana during the Tirana Photo Festival 2019.

In 2018 I worked for Der Spiegel and Die Zeit, making reports on the Albanian diaspora and on an Iranian military training camp near the capital. In addition to the work on Albania 2019, I carried out a "ravers' interiors" survey on the traveling world of free party which has also become a self-produced fanzine. In 2017 the book "Steel Here - America Flavor" edited by Elisa Biagi, authorial approach to the story of an amateur American football team from Terni (the Steelers). From which an exhibition was then created at the MUFA (Museum of American Football) in Castel Giorgio. In 2016 I participated in the collective exhibition about the Italian Street Photography "ET CETERA - Italian Street Photography", hosted by the Italian Cultural Institute in Prague (Czech Republic). In 2015, during the opening ceremony of the first TIphF (Tirana International Photo Festival) I presented the photographic project "Ikim" on the Albanian diaspora. I studied photography mainly as a self-taught but also attending courses and workshops: "Ad Personam" curatorial path with Laura Manione "IsoZero" authorship in photography, held by the photographer Efrem Raimondi; “How to write about you and your art” presentation of personal photographic projects with Laura Tori Petrillo for Academy Now; Development and printing of analogue photography with Stefano Bernardoni; Documentary photography with the photographer Andrea Roversi.
